What it actually feels like
Most people visiting Notre-Dame today walk in with a free ticket and an audio guide. We walk in with a state-certified guide-conférencier — the only credential legally permitted to formally interpret French national monuments inside their walls.
The cathedral reopened in December 2024 and the difference is staggering. Cleaned stone the colour of cream. A rebuilt oak roof that re-creates the medieval forest of beams lost in the fire. The 8,000-pipe organ, miraculously untouched. Rose windows back to their twelfth-century intensity.
Add Sainte-Chapelle and you finish in the most spectacular interior in France: 1,134 panels of stained glass that Louis IX built specifically to house the Crown of Thorns — a relic that cost him twice what the chapel did.
