The garden Monet painted for 43 years — and turned into Impressionism.

About Giverny

Giverny, in a nutshell.

Giverny is a small village in Normandy, 75 km northwest of Paris, where Claude Monet lived from 1883 until his death in 1926. He bought the pink-and-green house, dug the lily pond, and painted both obsessively for 43 years.

The garden is open to visitors from April to November and is the second most visited site in Normandy after Mont Saint-Michel.

Notes from our guides

What to know before you go

  • The garden is closed November to March. Best months: May (irises, wisteria on the Japanese bridge), June (roses), September (dahlias, late lilies).
  • Arrive at opening (9:30am) or after 4pm to avoid the worst coach crowds.
  • Pair the visit with the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris — Monet designed his Water Lilies cycle there as a 'haven of peaceful meditation'.
  • The Hôtel Baudy, where the American Impressionists lodged in the 1880s, is still a working restaurant. Lunch there.
