Mont Saint-Michel — private tours with Astra Via
Normandy, on the Brittany border

Private tours in Mont Saint-Michel.

A medieval abbey on a tidal island, rising from the bay like a vision.

About Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel, in a nutshell.

Mont Saint-Michel sits in a vast tidal bay on the border of Normandy and Brittany, about 360 km west of Paris. The granite islet is crowned by a Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century and has been a pilgrimage site for over a thousand years.

The bay has the highest tides in continental Europe — up to 14 metres — and the sea retreats up to 15 km before racing back in 'as fast as a galloping horse', as Victor Hugo wrote.

What to see in Mont Saint-Michel

  • The Abbey

A vertical stack of three monasteries built on top of each other — the famous 'Marvel' on the north face is a Gothic engineering masterpiece.

  • Grande Rue

The single medieval street that spirals up the island, lined with houses dating from the 15th century.

  • The Ramparts

Built to keep the English out during the Hundred Years' War — Mont Saint-Michel never fell.

  • The Bay

Walked at low tide with a licensed guide — quicksand and the famously fast incoming tide make solo walks dangerous.

Getting there

How to reach Mont Saint-Michel

  • By car: 4 hours from Paris via the A13 / A84 motorways.
  • By train: Paris Montparnasse to Rennes (1h30 by TGV) or Pontorson, then bus / shuttle to the Mont.
  • Best done as a 2-day private tour from Paris combined with the D-Day beaches or Saint-Malo.
Getting around

Local transport

  • Cars must park on the mainland (€15.50/day). A free navette shuttle runs to the causeway every 12 minutes.
  • From the shuttle drop-off, it is a 10-min walk over the causeway to the village gate.
  • Bay walks at low tide must be done with a licensed guide — quicksand and the incoming tide are real risks.
Notes from our guides

What to know before you go

  • Check the tide tables — high tides ('grandes marées') a few times a year actually surround the island again. Spectacular when it happens.
  • Sunrise and sunset at the Mont are extraordinary; staying overnight on the mainland is the only way to see them without coach crowds.
  • The abbey is a 30 min climb to the top. Bring water and good shoes — the village steps are steep and slippery.
  • Avoid the Grande Rue restaurants — go just outside the village walls for better food at half the price.
