About Loire Valley

Loire Valley, in a nutshell.

The Loire Valley stretches 280 km along France's longest river, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. From the 15th to 17th centuries it was the favourite residence of French royalty, who built more than 300 châteaux along its banks.

The central section between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2000 — the largest cultural site in France.

The 'ladies' château' — built across the river Cher, designed and saved by a series of remarkable women.

Getting there

How to reach Loire Valley

  • By car: 2h from Paris to Blois or Tours via the A10 motorway.
  • By TGV: Paris Montparnasse to Tours in 1h15, or to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps in 1h05. Local TER trains and taxis cover the last mile to the châteaux.
  • By private tour: we design custom door-to-door itineraries — typically a long day for two châteaux, or 2 to 3 days to do the region justice.
Getting around

Local transport

  • Once in the valley, the châteaux are 20 to 60 min apart by car. Public transport between them is limited.
  • Bike: the Loire à Vélo route is 900 km of riverside cycle path — flat, scenic, world-class. Easy to cover Chenonceau–Amboise–Chambord on bike with luggage transfers.
  • Train + taxi works for one or two châteaux a day; a private driver-guide is much more efficient for three or more.
Notes from our guides

What to know before you go

  • Best months: May, June, September. Spring blooms and autumn light flatter the châteaux. Avoid August school holidays.
  • Chambord and Chenonceau are the two unmissables. Pair them with one smaller château (Cheverny, Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau) for variety.
  • Stay overnight in the valley if possible — early morning at Chambord before the coaches arrive is unforgettable.
  • Pair châteaux with a Loire wine tasting: Vouvray (Chenin Blanc) near Tours, Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc) further east.
